You know what I would like to do on thanksgiving? I’d
like to abandon my family so I can work for 42 hours. Apparently Kmart will not allow its employees
the holiday off. Jillian Fisher (Kmart employee) opened a petition on
coworker.org about getting time off for the holidays. 13 states had about 56
surveyed employees on this matter. Of the 56, only 3 had the option to have thanksgiving
off.
On billmoyers.com you can see a picture taken showing a
sign stating that any Kmart employee that doesn’t show up will be automatically
fired. Many employees were willing to work split shifts and quickly got denied.
There are reports of employees not having a day off from November 15 to January
1st. More reports say that seasonal workers didn’t have a choice in
the matter. They were automatically scheduled for work regardless of their
plans.
Kmart employees will not be the only ones in this
situation. About 12 more retail chains will be opening requiring millions to
work on Thanksgiving Day. Fisher says that she plans to continue the fight
against the dreaded Kmart. She wants answers for all those people who have to
choose whether to have more hours or family time. With thanksgiving around the
corner, I know where I will be next week.
